As November comes to a close and we wrap-up National Homelessness Awareness Month, a recent 60 Minutes segment reminds us of the severity of family and child homelessness, and how action is needed beyond this month. The segment highlights the number of families in the U.S. who are forced to live in their cars after finding themselves homeless, and the struggles they endure.
Food for Thought: Food Stamp Challenge Helped Me Empathize With Homeless Families and Individuals

This past week, a few colleagues and I participated in a Food Stamp Challenge, where for one week we lived as if we were receiving food stamps. The average Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) allotment for a single person for one week is only $31.50, which averages out to be $4.50 a day and $1.50 a meal.

Over 1.5 million children and youth in America experience homelessness annually- one in 50 children each year. Progress to combat child and youth homelessness in the U.S. can be made if federal agencies align their efforts, coordinating both program and funding streams. A high quality, fully-funded, and efficient support system of housing and services is necessary to make this happen.
