Home Visitation Programs

Evidence-based home visitation programs can dramatically improve the health, education achievement and economic sufficiency of low-income families. These services are delivered in the homes of low-income expectant mothers and mothers with young children by specially-educated nurses, social workers, child development specialists or other trained individuals. Mothers receive counseling on on prenatal care, child health and development, proper nutrition, employment training, and a variety of other services that children and families need to maintain healthy, economically stable lives.

Research results from one model of home visitation, Nurse Family Partnership, shows that for every dollar invested in the nurse home visitation program model, $5.70 is saved due to improved prenatal care, fewer subsequent pregnancies, increased maternal employment, decreased childhood injuries, improved school readiness. First Focus supports legislation to provide funding for evidence-based home visitation programs with the goal of ensuring that all children have a healthy start and families are empowered to lead healthy lives. These programs provide families with access to trained, registered nurses who counsel their clients in their homes
